Equal Pay Days 2014 in Europe during March/April
Last year our affiliated federations and clubs in Europe were active again for organizing events and activities around Equal Pay Day.
First results of our Equal Pay Day Awareness campaign have been achieved in some countries.
The European Equal Pay Day was in 2012 on 2nd March as the average pay gap decreased to 16.4 % (17 % in 2011)!
Last year BPW in 23 countries in our region were active on Equal Pay Day. In 2014 BPW UK and Iceland are increasing the number of Equal Pay Day countries.
On Youtube there are many videos about Equal Pay Day this year!

WOMEN–OWNED BUSINESSES – THE ECONOMIC IMPERATIVE
Recognizing that policies to support women-owned businesses have fallen off the European Commission's legislative agenda, 28 citizens, one representing each member state, have initiated a European Citizens Initiative to make women in business a focus of ECONOMIC policy.
A European Citizens Initiative, ECI is an instrument set up within the European Treaty and legislative process to enable citizens of the EU to have a voice. In this case, the ECI known as Act 4 Growth, presents 4 key pieces of policy needed to increase the number of female entrepreneurs.
Significant measures are needed to capitalize on the full potential of enterprises for sustainable economic growth and job creation in Europe, especially following the crisis.
- ACT4Growth has 4 concrete proposals for policy intervention to develop female entrepreneurship and support sustainable growth in Europe.
- 1. Create an office of European Women's Business Ownership within the Ministry of Economy.
- 2. Appoint a Women’s Enterprise Director
- 3. Collect data, produce annual policy and research updates
- 4. Enforce current gender equality legislation
- These policies replicate those put in place in 1988 in USA who then doubled the number of female entrepreneurs and increased jobs created. The mandatory element of data collection and procurement policy had the greatest effect.
